Danes, Thank yous, Crates and Avoidence

First off Roscoe and I were at the park Tuesday for quite a while.
Met some fine new people and dogs that I hope become friends of us all. What a nice day it was, I wish more could have enjoyed it. Roscoe hasn't given me his opinion on all that but I think he did enjoy his visit in his own way as always, walking some, playing some, beggin' for attention and treats then stretching out for a rest (or 2 or 3). He's such the dog.

Secondly, Some thank yous are in order.

Some milk crates have been hung around the park for balls and other toys. Thanks goes out to Pat for the idea and to Joe and the drive through in Kent on Brady Lake road for their donation of some of the crates and another thanks to Joe for his help with their instillation.

KC, Dee and Jim, A BIG THANK YOU for all the work your doing with the fund raising and and being the link between the parks commission and all of us at Bowwow Beach!

Jim had a great find yesterday in a very nice lady named Kim who brokers promotional products, she is new to the park and wants to get involved. Good find Jim.

Welcome aboard KIM!

If you haven't heard KC has started a Bowwow Beach page on Facebook for pictures and news updates. If your a member of Facebook or willing to become one I recommend you check his page out at;

http://tinyurl.com/FOBB-KC

(KC there's an easy short link to promote your site with. I'll post it the link section here.)

Babette, thank you for stepping up and helping to moderate this group and volunteering to do the news letter. I can tell by your contributions here that you can write. I look forward to reading all "the news that is the news" lol. Name suggestion, The Beach Howler.

Bobbie, thank you also for being a new moderator of this group and doing your part to help the park in the ways you can.
(I need a camp fire.)

Lastly;

The Dane Thing.
I find these type of discussions important, not to point out any individual dog or owner but to help educate us in how to handle a given situation that could arise. I created Bow-WowBeach.com and this Bowwow Yahoo group to help promote and support the park and to educate visitors new and old to know what to expect and have our members make suggestions on how to deal with dogs and people.

My personal thoughts;
I know the Danes owner has read everyone's comments and concerns and has not taken them lightly.

I was at the park on the day the "Dane thing" allegedly took place. I say allegedly because I didn't see anything happen but was told about it by a second party who didn't seem overly concerned. I know these Danes and in the years I have had interactions with them I haven't ever found them "overly aggressive". Maybe a little cranky at times but the owner is always there to quell the situation. Even Roscoe and I get a little cranky at times!

I agree with Dee when she says there are two sides to every story, I believe there are as many sides to a story as there are witnesses and the re-telling of any story.

I would have liked to have heard from the Danes owner on what he felt happened and more importantly how he would have like to have been approached about this incidence and what he would have done about it. Maybe that would have given us all an in site on how to deal with this or another owner, dog or happening of this sort. It may have cleared up some misunderstandings which I believe (along with ego and anger) are the root of most controversial discussions.

We are adults people.
I would like to see us put aside anger, ego and gut reactions and work together to find a solutions when something like this comes up.
Yes there are going to be disagreements but the more we work to solve them the better this group and the park will be. (My quest for utopia, lol)

Remember, it's a big park, 7 1/2 acres and a about 1/2 mile walk around the lake. That means if I don't like something, someone or dog I can be a quarter mile away from them at all times. I don't have to even walk by trouble if I don't want involved. If I see something I don't like happening in one spot I can walk part of the way around the lake and back. I can avoid situations or if I feel something is getting out of hand and I need to get involved I do. I don't have to dare someone or something to happen by making myself available to it by walking by or staying in the area because that's what "I" want to do.
I find it quite simple. I stay away.

As a last resort I dial 911. I've only had to do that once in the 3 years of almost daily visits Roscoe makes me take to the Best damn dog park there is.

I always say that Bowwow Beach is an anarchist society just like a dog pack, we police ourselves as much as possible.
The way we usually handle this is we approach the owners and suggest they either keep their dog under control and walk the dog leashed around the park once until it calms down or they will have to leave. I've went as far as leashing the dog and taking it to them. I've seen others do this also.

Most importantly:

Be calm and courteous but firm and straight forward.

.Don't have an attitude or be confrontational. .

DON"T  get drug into a pissin match.

Explain the park rules and their responsibility for their dogs actions.
If you don't feel comfortable doing this alone talk to other regulars that are there, most are willing to help. At most times when I have had to talk to somons about this sort of happenings by the time I'm done I have several people backing me up.

If this fails you will have to notify the police. I always warn the owner that this will HAVE to be done and it's not something we like to do. I have had to do it once in the past. I feel calling in the police is a last ditch response.

 If a dog or person is injured make sure to get a license number in case they try to leave.
Don't expect "someone" will do this, do it yourself and then you'll know it's done.

I was at the park last Sunday when a big yellow Lab ran in and the Lab started attacking other dogs immediately. Poor little Vegas was one of dogs who were attacked and he was bit on his ear--it is healing now. The owners explained that the Lab had not been to the park this year and was excited--well the dog was aggressive and I think should have been taken out of the park--the owners walked away from the entrance and called the Lab and he didn't respond to them but continued to attack other dogs! We were forced to leave as Vegas was terribly upset and hurting!!! I wish I knew what I could and could not say to the owners.
